Break Bad Habits with Attempt-Based Blocking

A gentler, smarter way to block. Become more mindful of your browsing habits by allowing a set number of attempts before a block is enforced.

What is Attempt-Based Blocking?

Attempt-Based Blocking is a unique feature designed to interrupt mindless browsing habits. Instead of a hard, permanent block, this rule allows you to visit a distracting site a few times before it locks you out for a "cooldown" period.

You can set a limit, for example, allowing yourself to visit a site 3 times a day. On your fourth try, the site will become fully blocked. This counter can be set to reset automatically each day, giving you a fresh start. This acts as a pattern interrupt, making you consciously aware of how many times you are defaulting to a distracting site out of habit, and helps you build self-awareness to gradually reduce reliance on those sites.

Key Benefits

  • Builds Mindfulness: Makes you aware of unconscious browsing habits without being overly restrictive.
  • Less Disruptive: Allows for a quick, intentional check of a site if needed, but prevents endless scrolling.
  • Trains Better Behavior: Over time, it helps you naturally reduce the number of times you visit distracting sites.
  • Customizable: You decide how many "chances" you get before the block kicks in.

How to Set Up Attempt-Based Blocking

  1. When adding a site to your blocklist, select the "Attempt-Based" blocking type.
  2. In the fields that appear, enter the number of attempts you want to allow.
  3. Check the "Reset attempts daily" option if you want the counter to start fresh every day.
  4. Save the rule. The extension will now track your visits and enforce the block when the limit is hit.
